Photos - Australia - Wollongong - Bush Fire

Elvis is in the Illawarra.

People are in awe of this magnificent helicopter at the moment. People start honking their horns whenever they see this guy flying overhead. I was lucky enough to snap a shot as it was being relocated to this area.

Elvis, named that because it was once based in Memphis, is currently the most effective weapon Australia has against the bush fires. It was borrowed from Victoria, and is proving so successful that the Australian government has decided to buy three of them straight away.

Elvis can carry up to 9,000 litres of water - the equivalent of three fire trucks - but more impressive is the fact that it can refill itself in 45 seconds from fresh water, or 23 seconds from the ocean (the differences arising due to the different hoses used in each case).
